E. coli Outbreak: The balance has reached at least 43 dead in Europe
E. coli outbreak caused by bacteria resulted in new victims in Germany, the balance amounting to at least 43 dead in Europe, according to the German health authorities.
Only one person died outside Germany, namely a woman in Sweden, said the Federal Institute for Health Surveillance Robert Koch.
.
During the epidemic, which spread through the consumption of seeds germinated were recorded approximately 3,800 patients in 16 countries, including 850 patients in serious condition, said Thursday, on the other hand, the World Health Organization (WHO) .
Number of new registered cases decreased steadily from the peak of the epidemic, registered on 22 May. But if one takes into account the delay in reporting cases, the total number of patients in Germany will increase further, said WHO.
According to a study by researchers at the University of Munster, published Wednesday in the journal Lancet, the bacteria "killer" is a combination of two strains, namely strain EHEC (enterohaemorrhagic E. coli) and EAEC strain (E. coli enteroagregativ) particularly dangerous because of its ability to attach to the intestinal wall.
