Icelandic eruption will have immediate impact on flights in Europe

Icelandic eruption Grimsvoetn should not have impact on flights in the rest of Europe, at least the next 24 hours, said Sunday air safety organization Eurocontrol European.

"There now exists a European or transatlantic flight on impact, and the situation should remain so in the next 24 hours, " Eurocontrol said in a statement.

Grimsvoetn volcano, situated under a glacier in southeast Iceland, the eruption came Saturday. This is the most active volcano in the country, with nine eruptions between 1922 and 2004.

Eruption, after which the lava came into contact with the ice off a huge cloud of smoke and Sunday morning caused the closure of Icelandic airspace.

A cloud of ash released by the volcanic eruption in Iceland in April 2010 generated Eyjafjöll highest closing airspace in peacetime Europe, with more than 100,000 flights were canceled and more than eight million passengers stranded.
