Fenugreek seeds imported from Egypt to France and Germany in 2009 and 2010 played a role in producing illness with E. coli bacteria resulted in Europe, the death of at least 48 people, announced on Wednesday the European Food Safety Agency EFSA.
Hypothesis imports from Egypt included a "rapid assessment of risks", made with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), after reporting new cases of disease in Bordeaux.
"(...) Investigation progresses and shows that fenugreek seeds important in Egypt in 2009 and / or 2010 are involved in the two cases" of poisoning reported in Germany and France, according to the assessment.
"There are still many uncertainties clear up the point that we really know if this is a common cause of all infections, provided that until now no positive bacteriological results," adds European document.
Consignment imported in 2009 "seems to be related to the onset of illness in France and one in 2010 is considered to be involved in the outbreak in Germany," said European assessment.
"These (hypotheses) are still under investigation. In particular, an investigation was urgently required on distribution of these groups in Germany and Europe in general. Exports of some of these seeds imported from Egypt to another company in the UK (where the seeds were exported Frnaţa) demonstrates the need "for such information, adds the document.
In Bordeaux there were ten cases of disease and the investigation conducted by the Directorate for French consumption (DGCCRF) indicated that they were caused by seeds germinated fenugreek, mustard and lettuce.
Epidemic in Europe resulted in at least 48 victims and 47 of the deaths were registered in Germany.
