Obesity affects sperm quality

Obesity affects sperm quality

Obese male sperm is less rich in sperm, and this has a direct impact on their fertility, according to a French study that was presented in Stockholm on Monday, in a congress of European Society of Human Reproduction (ESHRE).

The study was conducted in late 2010, a sample of 1,940 people, a team led by Dr Paul Cohen-Bacrie, scientific director of medical biology laboratory Unilabs Eylau, Paris. It is "the largest study ever conducted" on the subject, experts say the Unilabs, a group which includes laboratories in 12 European countries, established in Switzerland.

"Excess weight leads to a change in sperm parameters, probably due to a hormonal imbalance, resulting in a deficit in number, mobility and vitality (sperm, no), which leads to decrease the chances of fertilization," said Dr. Cohen -Bacrie.

Researchers analyzed sperm volume, its pH, the concentration of sperm in a milliliter of semen, their total number, their mobility, their vitality, the percentage of atypical forms etc.. Correlation coefficients were established between these parameters and body mass index (BMI) - which defines corpulence.

People who have a BMI (ratio between weight and height squared) of less than 18 are considered weak, those with a BMI between 18 and 25 are considered as having normal weight, those with a BMI of between 25.1 to 30 are overweight, and obesity begins when BMI exceeds 30.

The people have more weight in excess, the quality of their sperm declines, especially the concentration and total sperm.

Thus, the concentration of sperm decreased by 10% compared to overweight people with normal weight and 20% in obese individuals. All these people, motility decreased by 10%.

The total number of sperm - between 184 and 194 million per milliliter in people with normal weight - to fall to 164-186 million people are overweight and obese people 135-157 million. Percentage of people suffering from a total absence of sperm (azoospermia) increases from 1% for people with normal weight to 3.6% in obese individuals.

With age, the effect BMI had on the concentration and sperm number remains the same, but motility in obese people decreases significantly.

Doctors already know that obese women may be too weak or ovulation disorders. But "when a couple wants to have children must take into account the weight of man, which is an important element," said study coordinator.

Fortunately, doctors were able to find the French about 300 patients tested for fertility problem that is reversible. Managed to lose these people "recover" lost parameters in terms of sperm quality.
