Lokon volcano eruption in Indonesia spectacular, but that did not affect flights
Indonesian volcano Sunday Lokon saw the most spectacular eruption in recent weeks, projecting enormous clouds of ash 3,500 feet, authorities announced.
"Volcano eruption came in this morning and it is the largest eruption in late June," an official told AFP in Volcanology services in Indonesia, Kristianto.
"I asked the airport to be alert because the ashes will rise. But so far flights are not affected," he said.
"The volcano continues its eruption phase. We can not predict if the volcanic activity will slow or will be rash."
Over 5,200 people have fled from around the volcano eruption that began Thursday, with rocks, lava and ashes thrown over one km high.
The alert was raised to its highest level after the volcanic activity, which has an altitude of 1580 meters and is located in northern Sulawesi island, significantly increased in intensity in June.
Thursday night, a rash stronger than others "designed ash, sand and rocks at a height of 1,500 meters," says Kristianto. Vegetation was on fire within a radius of 500 meters around the volcano.
November rash, less important, occurred Friday morning.
About 28,000 people live in surroundings Lokon volcano, one of the most active in the region. He entered the eruption in 1991, killing a Swiss tourist, then in 2002.
