Humanitarian catastrophe UN says famine in two regions of Somalia

Two regions of southern Somalia, Islamist insurgents controlled shebab, where there is a very serious drought, are hungry, the UN announced on Wednesday in Nairobi.

Organization "United Nations said today (Wednesday) that there is famine in Somalia two regions: the southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Somalia.

"Unless we act now, hunger will expand in all eight regions of southern Somalia in the next two months due to poor harvests and the emergence of infectious diseases," warned Mark Bowden, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Somalia.

OCHA believes that about half the Somali population, or 3.7 million people, of whom 2.8 million live in the south, are, by now in a crisis.

Over ten million people are affected in the Horn of Africa drought, which, according to the UN, could be the worst in decades.

Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda are also affected. Americans urged Eritrea to announce whether it is affected by this climate catastrophe.

But in Somalia, the situation is even worse because of ongoing armed conflicts. And Somalis fleeing their country by the thousands, to Eritrea and Kenya, vecime.
