An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred since Thursday morning in the Pacific Ocean, near the Kermadec Islands. He was issued a tsunami alert for New Zealand and Tonga, which was subsequently canceled, according to the Center for the Pacific tsunami alert, quoted by Australian ABC channel.

New Zealand authorities have warned people not to enter the water, saying they will be very strong currents.

According to the USGS, the earthquake took place on Thursday at 7.03 local time (Wednesday, 22.03, GMT), 200 kilometers east of Raoul Island, Kermadec Archipelago part, to a depth of about 50 kilometers.

Kermadec Islands are located about 900 kilometers northeast of New Zealand.

"An earthquake of magnitude with such potential to produce a devastating tsunami that may reach the coast within a few hours near the epicenter," announces the Center for the Pacific tsunami alert, quoted by AFP.
