At least 50 people died from E. coli bacteria contamination enteohemoragică, increasing the balance after the death of a woman in Germany and another person in the United States, according to AFP, citing information published by the German authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).
"A woman died yesterday in the Hanover region, and death linked to outbreak caused by bacteria ECEH. The woman, aged 74, died of heomolitic uremic syndrome (HUS)," serious complication of the disease, which causes kidney problems and neurological diseases, announced on Thursday evening, a spokesman for the German authorities.
Another person died in the U.S., all from HUS in a case where the strain was confirmed that caused the epidemic in Europe (O104: H4).
So far, the illness caused by E. coli have resulted in 48 deaths in Germany, one in Sweden and one in the United States. According to WHO, there were 4050 confirmed cases of infection in 16 countries (14 European countries, Canada and USA), of which 3900 were registered in Germany.
