Saffron can destroy tumors with minimal side effects

A substance extracted from turmeric can destroy cancerous tumors in the body in one session of treatment, therapy with minimal side effects, according to a study by British researchers.

A drug based on colchicine, a thin drawn from a variety of saffron, can become a "smart bomb" that targets cancer tumors without harming surrounding healthy tissues, thus reducing side effects of traditional treatments.

However, this drug can destroy several types of tumors such as breast, prostate, lung and bowel.

It is possible that all solid tumors are vulnerable to such drugs, so could eliminate all cancer types except blood.

In some tests regarding this product, half of the tumors disappeared completely after a single injection, according to a study by researchers at the University of Bradford, which will be presented this week at the British Science Festival.

The drug, colchicine-based, drawn from a variety of saffron, is in an early stage of development and has been tested only in mice. Experts estimate that tests on humans could begin in 18 months and that the drug may appear on the market in six to seven years.

Colchicine is known for its anticancer long time, but was considered too toxic for human body. Researchers want to and attach a "tail" to disable chemical toxins until the drug reaches the tumor. Having reached the tumor, an enzyme called MMP, which is found in cancer cells will reactivate toxins so that these sick cells will not receive oxygen and nutrients to expand.
